Asheville School lost another legendary alumnus on Thursday, January 9 when the world-famous golf designer Pete Dye ’44 died in Florida.
Mr. Dye’s death was announced on Twitter by the family’s company, Dye Designs. He had suffered from dementia and lived in Gulf Stream, Florida. His wife, Alice, an amateur golfer whom he often collaborated with on his golf course designs died in February of 2019 at the age of 91.
An inductee in the World Golf Hall of Fame, Mr. Dye received the Asheville School Award of Merit, the school’s highest honor, in 2002. His brother, Andy 1946, graduated from Asheville School and went on to attend Yale University. Dye entered Asheville School in the fall of 1943 as a Sixth Former (senior) but joined the service and went into the parachute infantry prior to graduating from Asheville School.
Dye went on to design more than 100 public and private golf courses worldwide. His most famous courses are Harbour Town Golf Links, Whistling Straits and TPC Sawgrass, known for the “Island Green” on the 17th hole.
