Asheville School Celebrates Investiture of Ninth Head of School Dr. Anthony Sgro 1984

On Saturday, September 28, Asheville School will hold the Investiture of The Reverend Dr. Anthony H. Sgro 1984 as the ninth Head of School. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. in the Rodgers Athletic Center.

A 1984 graduate of Asheville School, Dr. Sgro said he is looking forward to being installed as the ninth Head of School in Asheville School’s 119-year history. “I’m incredibly honored to be back home at my beloved alma mater – a place where I have so many fond memories. As a boarding student at Asheville School, I formed lifelong friendships with my teachers, coaches and classmates. The nature of a deliberately small school is that it creates a terrific community. As the new Head of School, I consider myself fortunate to be part of this remarkable academic institution. Asheville School is one of the nation’s premier academic institutions. It has a long history of fostering the development of the mind, body and spirit of the students who attend the school.”

Dr. Sgro comes to Asheville School from Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School where he served as Head of School from 2011 to 2019. From 1999 to 2011, Dr. Sgro served on the faculty of Woodberry Forest School in Woodberry Forest, Virginia. He ended his tenure at the school serving as Assistant Headmaster and Dean of Students. Dr. Sgro attended Hampden-Sydney College and graduated with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Virginia Tech. He earned his doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2016, he had a fellowship at the prestigious Klingenstein Institute at Columbia University.

Currently, Dr. Sgro serves on the boards of The Association of Boarding Schools, Spoleto Study Abroad (chair), and The Heads Network (secretary). He is a member of the Cum Laude Society, The Headmasters Association and Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

Dr. Sgro is a graduate of the Diaconal Formation Institute of the Diocese of Virginia. He was ordained to the diaconate in the Diocese of Atlanta in 2011.

Dr. Sgro’s investiture marks an important moment in the school’s history, as he is the first Asheville School alumnus to serve as Head of School in the school’s 119-year history. Dr. Sgro succeeds Archibald R. Montgomery IV, who retired in June of 2019 after 17 years of service.
